The ESG and European
higher education quality.

A short orientation to the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area.

What is the ESG?

The European Standards and Guidelines, adopted in 2015, provide a shared reference for internal and external quality assurance in higher education. The three-part structure covers institutional systems, external review practice and the quality-assurance agencies themselves.

Why it matters

Rather than treating quality as a marketing claim, the ESG encourage documented mechanisms for learning outcomes, educational resources, student support, public information and continuous improvement. External agencies are expected to meet standards of method, expertise, independence and accountability.

What the ESG does not mean

A private organisation cannot obtain formal European recognition by stating that its own service is “ESG based”. EQAR registration requires actual eligible external quality-assurance activity and an independent external review against relevant ESG provisions.
